A bettor profited close to $500,000 by predicting the removal of Nicolás Maduro shortly prior to it was made public, raising questions about the possibility of profiting from non-public details of the US operation.

Market Movement in Wagers

Wagers on Polymarket, a crypto-powered platform, that the leader would be no longer in control by the end of January increased in the period preceding Donald Trump announced on January 3rd that the Venezuelan leader had been apprehended.

A single trader, which joined the platform in December and placed four wagers, all on political events in Venezuela, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a modest bet of $32,537.

The identity is unknown. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Market Signals Before News Break

Trading information shows that participants put the odds of Maduro's exit at just a low 6.5 percent in the midday period of the Friday before the event.

However the market's assessment had jumped to 11% by the end of the day and skyrocketed in the morning of the next day, suggesting a rapid movement in positions just before the social media post was made.

"This specific wager has all the hallmarks of a transaction based on inside information," stated an industry expert.

Several of other traders also earned large payouts from bets on the same outcome.

Political Attention Intensifies

Elected officials are growing concerned.

A new rule introduced on Monday aims to prohibit public officials from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a wager.

Market Background

Prediction markets have surged in popularity in the past few years, with users able to bet on everything from sports outcomes to politics.

The industry encountered regulatory challenges under the previous administration. Yet it has found a more favorable environment during the Trump presidency.

Insider trading is against the law in the stock market, but there are more ambiguous rules in the forecasting space.

An official representative for another major platform said their site "has clear rules against insider trading of any form."
