The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run on the road in the Premier League and delivered Everton their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven struck on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to place their strong form at risk, and they were unable to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a third to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the tally a short while after the defender's opener, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, failed to convert a number of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent saves to ensure Tottenham went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising the match official to review the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee ruled that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's team into third place in the Premier League, five points off north London rivals and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club stay in 14th position and are six points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in role at each end of the field

After a drab midweek performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a only attempts on goal, the manager opted for the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the pitch, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with the midfielder directing the ball toward the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - added his next goal in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to nod in.

Van de Ven was just as impressive in defence, combining effectively with Kevin Danso as the pair handled superbly with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by the opposition.

Everton's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the freshness may have faded somewhat and supporters flocked to the exits after the midfielder's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a massive worry for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Everton's pair of established centre-forwards - had netted only a single goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were failed to add to that poor record on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was epitomized when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, despite having room and opportunity to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, as well, was unable to make an impact after replacing the starter in the second half.

It wasn't for a lack of chance. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who tirelessly whipped dangerous crosses into the Tottenham box.
