The White House disclosed the initiation of government employee terminations on Friday, making good on earlier warnings linked to the continuing US government shutdown, which is set to stretch into its third straight week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

Russell Vought posted on a public platform that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the official procedure for terminating staff.

Although Vought provided no details on which departments were affected, a treasury spokesperson stated that layoff warnings had been distributed within that agency. Furthermore, a DHS representative indicated that layoffs would take place at the CISA. Also, a labor organization representing federal workers confirmed that members at the Department of Education would be impacted by the reduction in force.

Union Response and Court Actions

Union leaders warned that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on public services used by millions of Americans and pledged to challenge the moves in court.

“It is disgraceful that the government has exploited the government shutdown as an pretext to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who deliver critical services to the public across the country,” stated Everett Kelley, who leads the AFGE.

The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the news, saying, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to vote for a Republican-backed legislation to restore funding unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. Following repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, indicating the standoff is unlikely to be resolved soon.

During a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, Mike Johnson, criticized Senate Democrats for rejecting the Republican proposal, which passed in the House on a largely partisan basis.
